It is a nice, simple layout and seems to work fine for me, with a
broadband connection and an iMac G4 20" system. I use Safari almost
exclusively.

Hi all,
Ever since I created my photo galleries I've been wanting to redo
my gallery viewer as I think it looks absolutely terrible. I
wanted to do something self-contained with the big image presented
alongside thumbnails. That's not an easy job in my case because
the images can have basically any aspect ratio, which makes a tidy
presentation extremely difficult.
Over the past day or so I've been working on a new concept but I'm
not sure how well it'll be accepted, as it's reliant on
Javascript. I have an idea for gracefully working around it but
that'll take a while to implement, and in the mean time I thought I
might as well get some feedback.

Some of the links in the page are deliberately broken but all of
the navigation within the gallery should work fine. I plan to add
some feedback to let you know when a file is loading, because the
display doesn't update until after the big pic has finished loading
(on dialup this could be a while).
I've tested with Safari, IE5 Mac, IE6 XP SP2, Camino, Firefox and
Opera. It works in all of them, but IE isn't quite as nice as the
others.
I wanted it to work in a 1024x768 screen but my vertical pics are
600 pixels high so the browser ideally needs to be in fullscreen
mode (F11 for IE). I'm undecided about automatically rescaling the
vertical ones, which would make things a lot easier.
The photos are a random selection from my trip to the West Coast in
2000. I chose them because that's about where my scanning project
is up to :)
Thanks,
- Dave
