I've just finished making a whole bunch of changes. One of those is that vertical and square(ish) pics are rescaled to 500 pixels height. The rescaling is done in the browser from the original 600px file.
On my partner's XP laptop I can now have IE maximised (not F11 full- screen) at 1024x768 and fit both the photo and the text. Other browsers will vary based on toolbar sizes and whether the task-bar is auto-hidden or not, but there seems to be plenty of space available to accommodate that.
BTW the thumbnail positioning and its animation now seem to work properly in IE. I've thought about making it smoother but I'm worried about how well it'll work on older computers.
There are a few more things on my to-do list but they can wait a little longer. Rewriting my gallery editor is going to be interesting...
