If I have to make music from MIDI and turn it into
MP3, I'll call my brother!

Will you ask him for me, Godfrey, please?

You mean regards *how* to convert MIDI to MP3?
Well, I know he uses Mac OS X and Pro Tools to do his work... I'll ask what else.

Jens,

I talked to my brother this evening. Regards getting MP3 from MIDI, keep in mind the basic concept:
  MIDI == instructions
  MP3 == compressed sound

So you need to have some way to "play" your instructions to a device such that the device renders the sound which can then be rolled into an MPEG-3 codec for compression.

He uses Pro Tools, Logic, and several other sound programs to do his work in mixing and rendering sound for various targets. He said, for casual use, GarageBand on Mac OS X is probably the way to go. One notch above that is Logic Express for those who are doing more sophisticated sound work.

I also asked him about the rights to the music I want to embed in photographic presentations. He said, simply, "Call the Harry Fox Agency in New York. They run virtually the entire business of music rights and releases in the United States and probably a good bit of the rest of the world. They'll give you the whole scoop on what is or isn't a Fair Use situation, and whether a release to use a particular piece of music can be had for peanuts or diamonds.

Godfrey
