We don't know that they didn't. If you eliminate the eject button, the
pictured door may well be wide enough for a CF card. Trying to
determine the size of the door based on the size of the flash shoe is
impossible. We don't know what lens the camera was shot with, so the
perspective relationship is unknown.

the D (and subsequently bought CF cards)?
They should have designed it to take both types.
