What about other characteristics like bokeh how do the two compare. Basically your comments are tempting me to go for the 77 instead of
the 85. the 77 is slightly cheaper to boot.

One more question, does the front element on the 77 rotate when focusing ?

Nope - front element on the 77 is steady. One thing though, the focus ring on the 77 moves during AF. The 85 is all internal focusing and nothing on the outside of the lens spins when AF.

I don't have any direct comparisons, so this is by no way a scientific test. But I don't think you will have any problem with bokeh on either lens.

77:

85 (old one from the archives):

Now, your big question. Which one would I buy if I had to choose. If I were a clever dick, I'd say the 85 because they will become rare, and I could always save up later for the 77. But if I could buy only one, ever, it would probably be the 77, because I'd use it a lot more.
