The manual white balance button on the D is in that same general area
as well.

Yes I see that now, up to the point that I made that comment no one

actually posted a pic of that side of the body.
I must be blind.
On that side of the body, I am seeing the AF switch, what is likely
the white balance button and the prism flash release.

I don't know whether that is a button or a plug covered with a rubber
dust cap. Why would there be a white balance button there? seems an
awkward location for that sort of thing. What about the door on that
side of the body, behind which I expect most of the connections
(power, remote, USB/video, etc)...
