At 16mm barrel movement is virtually imperceptible on my lens. I would
guess it's half a millimeter or less. But the 12-24 is even better. It
doesn't extend to full wide. I don't know how it works mechanically,
but it's fully retracted at both 12 and 24 and extends only a small
amount at the in-between focal lengths. Of course it costs twice as
much as the 16-45.

Send it back. You must have gotten a bad one. Mine is as tight as my A
and K primes at the 45mm position. Even extended to the full wide

that have similar extended length.
There is nothing wrong with it that would be remedied at a repair
shop, it's
sloppy by design. At the 16mm the end of the barrel moves at least 2mm
laterally. The 24-90 was sloppy too, I've never been a fan of zooms or
AF
lenses, the VS1 lens I had was about the best I've used mechanically
pity it
flared like crazy.
