Bill Owens swears by using 181 however and that route avoids the

I-77 and take 421 over to Boone and 105 to GFM (2.5 to 3.0 hours).
Bill sent me to GFM on the I-77 to Statesville (had I had more
time, I would have stopped at the Balloonworks factory for a
visit), and then over to Boone and on to GFM.
I followed him back to Charlotte on a much more scenic route
(181?), though the closer we got to his place, the more confusing
the road system got.
FWIW, North Carolina has the most poorly marked and confusing road
system I have encountered anywhere in the USA. It's like the people
there don't want you going somewhere unless you already know how to
get there. I live just across the state line in Virginia and there
is simply no comparison in how well roads are marked. Most of the
times I have actually gotten lost on driving trips have been in North
Carolina. And don't even hope to use internet services like MapQuest
to find places in North Carolina. I've found examples where they
actually tell you to go north on a road when you should be going south.
