Optical resolution? Anyway, you should end up with >400 megs image, if I
did calculations right... Haven't tried to downsample that image to 300dpi
and then print? Quality should be the same...  ;)

P.S. Seems that there are as much techniques as software users. My method
is (scanning from prints, I haven't scanner which would be powerful enough
to scan slides well): scan the image @ 600dpi, use Unsharp Mask, then  use
preferred tool to clear scratches/dust, do little blur, downsample to
300dpi and you have virtually perfect image, now adjust levels if necessary
and print it/bring it to designer/delete it/whatever :)
