Very cheap telephoto lenses are often mirror lenses. It's possible to bet a 400-500mm for less than 100 USD.
Annother apropach could be older MF lenses combined with an AF adapter. I bought and old 200-500mm MF zoom (F.6.9), which I will try shortly. The adapter can be found for less than 100 USD. I'll try to combine it with the AF adapter with some primes too. An old M4/200mm can be purchased quite cheaply. With the adapter you have a 300mm AF lens at F. 6.3 or something like that. That's a start. It's worth a try.
