Axially - in fact, on closer inspection, there is slight but noticeable play 
that allows the entire ring to be pulled backwards towards the camera.

Regarding the axial movement, movement is most noticeable when the ring is 
moved backwards & forwards (to and from the lens cap) when grasped from 
underneath (180 degress from the distance scale)

This could all be quite normal, of course, but since the rest of the lens 
appears built to very fine tolerances I suspect a problem
