Hi all,
What is the current feeling about the Optio S4? I'm thinking of getting
one for my wife who
expressed a desire to take pictures recently. Or is there something
newer, or better, in the
Pentax P&S line that might do? I used a friends S5Z last year and it was
easy to use and
gave decent results.

Tell you what, Don...
I see there are 5 other posts in this thread, but *before* reading them I'm
going to tell you what my experience is, so I won't be knowingly repeating
anything any one else has to say!
I already had a decent digital camera, but it was a little too expensive and a
little too bulky to carry everywhere I went. As a result, I missed several
shots I really wanted to make, but no camera. I decided to buy a carry
everywhere camera.
To make the story shorter, I bought my S4 Optio in November of 2003.
I have quite literally carried it everywhere since!
I bought Olympus' leather zip case that is padded and fits on a belt or in a
purse. Just enough room for the camera, an extra battery and an extra memory card.
I've used it with and without flash, indoors and out, and have maybe 3 shots
total that were unacceptable, usually for exposure under difficult
circumstances. Actually, the fault was mine in not recognizing that ahead of
time, and re-setting the white balance.
Other than that, it's become my walk-around camera, instead of my larger,
possibly "more capable" camera.
Bottom line is, I like it, it takes excellent images, of more than merely
acceptable clarity and resolution, if I do my part.
For most of my photography, what more could I ask?
Last year I went out and bought an Optio S5i, thinking I'd switch over from
the S4 before long.
The S5i sits in the box, unused, as I'm too fond of the S4 to consider
switching yet!
As is obvious, I'm very happy with my purchase!
Good luck with your decision. All I can tell you is, MY Optio S4 is a pure
delight, and small enough to carry everywhere!
