You have all heard the reports. It has been out for quite a while.
There will be nothing new to learn from my ramblings. Still this lens needs
to be spoken about.
I have been fortunate to have the use of my Pentax rep�s personal 77
Limited lens for about five days. In a nutshell the impression I have is
AWESOME!
The first two rolls taken were at a softball game in the early
evening under lights. When I got the images back I was surprised by the
muted colors of the prints - using ASA 400. Fortunately the last couple of
shots were taken outside the photo store. The colors I am accustomed to
were there. Duuuhhh, the muted colors of the game were from the lighting.
The sales clerk commented on a couple of action shots I took, she liked the
stopping of the action and the quality of the images.
I would have to agree with the crowd in terms of how the subject
tends to have a "stand out", 3-D quality about them that makes them stick
out. I am not sure, and I have not really studied all the shots and
compared them to other lenses, if it is the subtle fuzziness you get with
the depth of field. I understand now the difficulty in explaining the
effect. I do know that I have had everyone who has seen an image or two or
three comment on the great shots. And the subjects were ordinary objects or
informal portraiture. That does say something about the lens.
Of course, you cannot overlook the size of the lens. It is
extremely compact with a 49mm filter ring size. It is basiclly the size of
my 50mm f1.4. this with the all metal construction really makes it a must
have lens. I used the lens in both auto and manual focus mode. The manual
focusing has a great feel to it. It takes a little getting used to with the
aperture ring so close to the camera body. But still a good grip and easy
to use. And its attached hood is easy to use and convenient.
Anyway, I have asked the shop to order one for me.

P.S. I have had some people here say that I should search around for the
best price. I am paying for the service, the ability of meeting a Pentax
rep, the service of that rep and a hundred other little things that I cannot
get from a chain store or mail order. Just think of how sad a place would
be without the true photo store.
