Kodak's doing that with a couple of their consumer cameras. It has some value, but be ready to pay for service providers on a monthly basis. Some folks are doing wi-fi for transferring captures directly to a storage unit outside the camera without the inconvenience of having to make wired connections.

Instant online communications I would find of extremely limited value in a camera. A camera is for making photographs, not for browsing the internet or answering email.

The purpose of the active network connection is to make it a real computer rather than just a PC peripheral. In this mode it could transmit, wired or wireless, pictures directly to the office. Instant online information, just like live webcasts. But better.
