Absolutely, but he then stated: "I make backups to firewire disks and store those off-site."

which mostly solves that problem. The only danger is deleting the last copy of a file BEFORE it is backed up. But that's a danger I deal with everyday in an enterprise environment. Users are stupid and backups are not instantaneous.
