very good point. add to that climate control, and that would add up
to quite a bit of maintanance.
imo, dvd/tapes backup is just that -- for disaster recovery.
it has to be done, yes, but it's kinda low priority (since true disasters
are kinda low probability events). since the hard drives
are dirt cheap right now, just having a few redundant  copies (preferrably on
different computers) should be OK. check their health (automatically)
periodically,
and they'll live forever.

personaly, i am paranoid and i keep a copy of all stuff that matters
off-site (out of country), online. that way, even if NYC is nuked, i
will still have
pictures of sashkas's first birthday at hand (if i have any hands left
at that time).
