Quite a few third party lens manufacturers make superb 100mm macro lenses and
I've heard the new Sigma 180mm f3.5 is superb. There simply isn't a market for
mediocre macro lenses.
I've heard good things about many third-party prime lenses. Again, it's a market
segment where there's little demand for low/medium quality: people who buy
primes are usually looking for high quality and are wiling to pay for it so the
designers oblige as best they can.
Speaking from experience, my new Sigma EX 300.2.8 APO is just outstanding in
every respect.
