Subject: OT <LOL> - What's a Firewall?

It's been suggested that I install a fire wall, but I don't really know
what one is or how they work. So, what's a fire wall, how does it work,
what are the pros and cons of using one, and where can I get one?

Firewalls are supposed to prevent unauthorized access to your computer from the outside, and prevent unauthorized access to the net from the inside.
They do this with varyingf degrees of success.....

Windows XP has a built in firewall. I haven't heard much good about it, but I don't know how much is true and how much is the knee jerk reaction to bash everything Windows.
Zone Alarm makes a good software firewall

If you have a permanent high speed internet connection, you should probably have a hardware firewall, which generally comes in the form of a router.
