That should work as long as you haven't copied anything TO the USB drive (memory card, whatever). If you wrote anything to the USB drive (etc.) then there's a chance that not doing the "Safely remove ..." thing will leave it in a messed up state. I don't know exactly what the level of risk is, but I've seen it happen.
