While I was looking at tripod legs today, I also glanced a look at the heads they had and played with the 468MGRC2. Not exactly what you're looking at, but the same basic head.

It's a decent ball head. I like the friction adjustment and quick latch/unlock on the ball. It's not as smooth in operation as the Acratech or Kirk heads, but it feels serviceable and reasonably precise.

When shooting birds I definitely needs stable support. But to shoot fast I would like something a bit more flexible than a regular head tripod combo.

So I'm debating. Shall I enable myself with a Bogen 393/Manfrotto 3421
Gimball mount head?
What I've found of reviews on it is very promising. But, there's one but. It is using the RC3 connection system. The head I've got now 486RC2 is using the RC2 connection system. So when going from the gimball to my all purpose head I will have to switch connection system. Not very practical. So buying the gimball will probably (at some point) lead to buying another head using
the same connection system.
The only head that's using RC3 is 468MGRC3.
http://www.manfrotto.com/Jahia/cache/offonce/pid/2316?livid=80| 81&idx=83 It's pricey, but it looks pretty good. But I would like to know if somebody
has got something qualified to say about this head.

The sidekick is off course an alternative. But to use that, I need a head using the Acra system first. And at this point I can't make that kind of
investment.
Major enablement's tends to disable the bank account ;-)
