Ryan,

The K1000 was a stripped down version of the KM so I suppose that it
also used the same meter cells, ie. cadmium sulphide (CdS). The virtue
of CdS is that they have good sensitivity and are well matched in colour
response to the human eye. Their downside is that they suffer from
memory, especially when moving from very bright to darker readings, and
can sometimes take several minutes to fully recover from exposure to
high levels of light. So the erratic performance of your K1000's meter
might be due to these conditions. Test it again, this time giving the
cells a little time to recover from bright readings, before you judge it
to be faulty.

Regards,
Anthony Farr
