At our house the hummingbirds fly right up to me and look me in the eye from a foot away. They buzz us and fly all around us within inches, especially if we are wearing anything red, purple, pink. They often come and eat out of the feeder while it's in my hand as I'm attempting to hang it up.
I understand your concern, but in general hummingbirds seem to be some of the most fearless birds there are.
