I doubt it.  I've got several power zoom lenses (including the
28-105, which is my walkaround lens on the *ist-D), but I don't
think I've ever used any of the extra features.  I sometimes
used the power zoom, rather than manually zooming the lens,
but even that is not possible on the *ist-D.

I really like the 28-105, but that has very little to do with
the fact that it's a PZ lens. And in any case my criteria are
very different from yours - I prefer longer focal lengths most
of the time, and am often satisfied with an aperture of f5.6
or so.   I don't think the lens offers you anything; if you
want a zoom in that range, the latest Pentax 28-105 is faster,
and IIRC Godfrey for one has good things to say about it.
