That's correct. My EF 300mm f/4L IS had manually controlled switches to allow H,V stabilization, V stabilization or no stabilization. The body participates in the operation of the stabilization only to the extent of turning on the power. The image stabilization mechanism works purely in an analog/mechanical fashion. With the stabilization in the body and processors available to apply logic to the stabilization effort, more is possible.
