Flickr is not my favorite either. I find the way it presents images to be distracting and annoying. It's been a while since I've been on it.
It would be suitable for a photo sharing site, but not a gallery in my opinion. I'm trying to make that distinction over and over again... photo sharing vs. a gallery.
