If you're making enough money on the shots that you would have missed by
stowing your gear more carefully (not a judgment call) then maybe you
don't need to
worry about caps and stuff like that.
True. When I was doing a lot of race photography for magazines some
twenty-five years ago, I used to keep my lenses in cotton socks that I
would then stuff in the oversize pockets of my pants and jacket. I never
bought expensive lenses or cameras, because the quality different is
negligible for average shots that would be used as a 1/4 page or less.
My most used 35 mm lens was a Vivitar 200/3.5. It had a lot of cleaning
marks from my having wiped it with my T-shirt. But I bet I made 20 or 30
K with that $100 lens. And that was in 1975 dollars. When I wanted to
shoot some stuff for spreads or covers, I used my 6x6 TLR Mamiya or my
Speed Graphic 4x5. (I sometimes shot hand held with the 4x5, using the
Speed Graphics rangefinder and a strobe for fill and speed.) Lots of
fun. But the point is, I never had any really good equipment when I was
shooting to make money. Couldn't afford it, and wouldn't have wanted to
subject it to the kind of use I gave that stuff. Shoot away, and pack
your lenses wherever you have find a spot for them.
