One could easily imagine having two different camera brands and needing to switch between them for any number of reasons, the batteries died in one, is a good example.
I've taken my microdrive from the camcorder and used it in the *ist D when the CF was full and I wanted to keep shooting and did not have time to download. You're right most times one would just download, but occasions arise when it's inconvenient or impossible to stop and download.
