I suspect that a big reason people don't want to change is that "small
amount math" involves fewer fractions with imperial than metric system
(SI) measurements.  You can only divide 10 by 2 and 5 without getting
fractions. You can divide 12 by 2, 3, 4, and 6 without fractions. After
watching many people take "the big sleep" mathematically with
fractions, I suspect that fractions scare the less "numerate" (like
literate but for numbers and math). Of course, multiplication is
typically much easier with SI units ...
