Actually, it's notable smaller than the D70, essentially the same size 
as the D50 (differs by a few mm in each direction)

Can't say either way, although I found the D70 to be better than the DL,

I shoot the D50. Noise is unnoticable at 800, at 1600 it leans more 
towards chroma noise, the D70 tends more to luminance noise, which is 
why it may be less objectionable although there's more of it.

The *istD had the best noise quality of all the cameras I've shot with 
extensively (D50, D70, *istD, 20D, 350D). Very film-like.
