Haven't done a lot of comparisons myself.
As for speed, I've tried the 350D only with the kit lens, and it didn't strike me as being faster than what I'm used to from older film Pentaxes. As people are reporting a somewhat significant speedup on the K100D compared to older digital models, which were probably already faster than e.g. my MZ-5n, I wouldn't be surprised if it beats Canons with cheap lenses.
