L series lenses date back to the 70's. L has denoted the best Canon 
lenses since long before the EOS system. Many of the EOS L lenses, 
especially the 85mm's and longer, are direct translations of the earlier 
designs to EOS mount and AF.

Note I'm also referencing other old glass, like Zeiss designs and Leitz 
stuff.
