A friend of mine is using this Bogen head with his Nikkor 500 f4:

That's the Bogen 3421 is that link is too broken up after I send this.  I 
haven; seen it yet (we were to go shooting this morning but it's raining) 
but it seems to offer the functionality of the WIberley and Kirk gimble 
heads, but at significantly less cost.  I'm hoping to see it soon, if it 
looks good I'll get it for my 400 f2.8.  The 400 has the tripod mount fused 
directly to the body (no "leg & foot" and it's fused at a fairly wide spot, 
so I would want to make sure it fits. I don;t know about the 600 f4, but 
doubt it would have that problem.
