I have posted it before. It's from "Scoop" by Evelyn Waugh (actually
it's an amalgam of 2 lists). The innocent reporter, William Boot, is
kitted out for his trip to Azania (Abyssinia) by an unscrupulous
retailer of tropical and safari equipment.

Boot has been told that runners in Azania carry messages in cleft
sticks, and that's how he will have to file his copy to the Daily
Beast.

"I want some cleft sticks, please." 
... 
"We can have some cloven for you."
