I think a macro would benefit of it. Usually a macro lens as a long (sometimes very long) focussing ramp (for obvious reasons). In this case, if SSM is supposed to be faster, then yes it would benefit a lot. My SMC 100/3.5 macro which I quite like is difficultto be used as a "normal" lens because of very slow focussing, simply because the time it takes to turn the whole focussing thing is huge.
