I can testify to the use of having a different looking bag. I had a bright red pull along case and recently, I looked out of the aircraft window as the plane was loading to see a baggage handler wheeling my bag away from the plane.
Grabbing the nearest stewardess (not literally) resulted in my bag getting put back onto the flight. It wouldn't have been noticed if it were plain black.
