My pop up shows depleted battery icon after 1-2 shots, but i just turn it off and on and its fine for a few more. If it won't fire the flash, you may have a problem.
I also get black imagie's sometimes using the pop up. This is common with the D1 and older batteries, even if they show full or partial full. Solution there is to replace the Nikon rechargable battery. May be a relation herem but im not sure.
