I originally got some light modifiers and some AF360FGZ's with stands
to do a poor man's setup.  What I found was the smaller flashes just
didn't have enough power.  When shooting in that environment, it is
not uncommon to want some fairly small apertures for DOF and the
clip-on flashes just don't have it.  On top of that, you have no
modeling lights, so it can be difficult to see what is going on with
your lighting setups.

I finally broke down and got a couple of Alien Bees and have been very
happy with them.  Based on my experience, I think you would be way
happier with real lighting rather than trying to cobble together a
couple of small flashes.
