I was in London on business last week, and got some time to chat with
a guy in the security check about hand luggage and photo gear. He was
very insistant that bringing photo gear in and out of Heathrow as hand
luggage would not be a problem as long as the bag/case fit within the
given size limits.

I also noticed at least 10 travellers with rolling suitcases
noticeably larger than the new size limits. Still, they got threm
through.

However, they may be more skittish about trans-atlantic flights. At
terminal 3, all pedestrian traffic from the trains into Departure is
now routed on the outside of the building past the check-in counters
of Virgin Atlantic and Continental.
