We're obviously not as civilised as you think. It used to be common in
IT and now spreading to other industries. I was an IT contractor for
about 7 years. The contract is between 2 companies, including your own
(Web-Options, in my case). It's your own company that pays you the
benefits. It doesn't cost the contracting company (your customer) much
less, but it means it's easy to get rid of you. The benefit to the
contractor is that you can earn more and optimise your tax situation,
provided you have regular work. 

However, the tax authorities put a stop some time back to 'fire on
Friday, rehire as a contractor on Monday', and to disguised employment
by tightening up on the tax optimisations available, so it's not as
advantageous as it used to be.
