Both are 7 in 7 designs, although the optical design did change somewhat between the two. The latter SMC-M version is essentially the SMC-A version with a non-A mount and aperture ring. It looks like they may have run out of parts for the earlier version and decided to put the A into production early, without spilling the beans on the A's most interesting features.
