Another app to consider is BreezeBrowser.  www.breezesys.com

I had my father look at Irfanview and it was a little too much to
throw at him.  BreezeBrowser doesn't do as much, but would do what you
have asked for.

I'm sure that you will hear of many other products.  Each will have
good merits.  Probably the best thing to do is think of his computer
skill set and how comfortable he will be with a particular product.
