I couldn't agree more!

When I think about the huge amount of information that my large
format slide originals hold (4x5") I cannot imagine
having a full frame imaging device in the very near future which could
come to the same quality as film with the same cost. Maybe in 20-50 years
from now ?
(Scanning line imagers are not suitable for all applications and even they
cannot
yet compete)
Right now I combine the best from both worlds. Shooting with the 4x5" gear
produces
fantastic originals. The originals scanned with a good quality (drum scan
quality)
scanners result in about 200MB files each (at around 2000dpi). Then I print
them out
with my Epson 2000P at about 13x16". But I can also get them printed out as
big as
26x33" and still get 300dpi. You are welcome to count all the needles in
those trees on my landscape photos which are all clearly visible ;-)
And if I want, I could get up to 4000dpi scans but right now I really cannot
afford
the processing power of the PC which I would need to handle those image
files (1GB ?)...
Give me a 100 MegaPixel imaging device for the price of about $1000 and
I will shut up :-) Digital is really good right now for the final stages
of photography (editing and printouts) but really poor in the early stages
(recording the original image).

Antti-Pekka
