The fact is that the sensor likely has a full well capacity of about 35k electrons, yes the output signal from the CCD is analogue but the noise on top of the wanted signal offers far less real data than a 22 bit system can resolve. The fact is that a 15 or 16 bit ADC should suffice to record all wanted information.
