Yeah, I am an old timer Pentaxian. My first camera was a Pentax 35mm P&S. About 28 years ago. Still have it.
And my first SLR was the K-1000. About six years ago. ;-) I decided if I was going to learn to do photography (better) I should start with an all manual camera where I'd finally learn what f-stops were. (And that was before the *IstD was even a gleam in it's inventor/designer's eye.) Overall, that scheme worked.
