Absolutely - and I'll often test hoods to find one that is optimal for a given lens and camera body. I'll mix 'em and match 'em, using generic hoods, earlier hoods for current lenses, deeper hoods than normal, and so on. IMO, it's especially important to use a hood if you're using a filter.
