I am in the process of considering the purchase of an expensive lens,
with a choice of two similar types, at similar prices.. I was in London
and popped into a Canon dealer near the British Museum. When I inquired,
the best the salesman would do is show me prints from the lenses (which
they had in stock). They would not let me handle the lenses (which
remained sealed in boxes) and certainly not attach it them to my camera.
The reason given was that once marked in any way, they would be
unsaleable. Of course, if I purchased, I could attach the lens to my
camera. I nearly walked there and then, but inquired as to price. 960
GBP came the reply. I asked if they would match the price to the same
lens for sale at a well-known camera shop based in Wales that does a lot
of trade on the internet. Absolutely not! 'We are not a testing ground
for cheap and nasty internet dealers'.

That's when they lost the sale. If he had said yes and given me 40 quid
off, I might have jumped there and then. Instead, they lost out on a
ready sale of £920. I won't be going in there again.

i do have some sympathy, but surely there are better sales techniques
than this.
