Most of them disappeared in the 80's when minilabs in department stores, 
supermarkets and pharmacy's took away most of the photofinishing 
business, which was their stock in trade. The ones that remained are the 
ones that had either a very solid equipment sales business, a superb 
location or a solid following with pro's.

Heck, most of the local 35mm film shooters I know go to a local Shoppers 
Drug Mart for processing C-41, as they do as good a job, for half the 
cost, as most of the local labs, as long as you only want development 
and low-res scans. Their prints suck though.
