If this post is correct, it confirms what some of us suspected: Pentax's stated reason for the delay was a fabrication:

I do not think that the poster of DPReview (or more precisely the retailer) asked the right channel to get this information. In Japan, it's accepted that the overwhelming orders was the reason for the delay. In the recent show, people of course asked the same question but Pentax replied that the manufacturing started some time ago. However, they are also telling the people that they are making the final tweaking of the firmware etc. But every mfrs does this. Some even release the firmware update within a month of release. Nobody so far heard the Pentax have any kind of problem to have caused the delay. And they are not that kind of people. If they gave false explanation to their customers, it will be easily discovered and scorned. One proof that this delay was qty/.shipment related is the fact that all other events (the shows included) that were planned BEFORE the delay announcement have been proceeding as scheduled. Also, I do not understand what this guy (Ned or somebody, VP of Pentax Imaging?) said about the schedule. He apparently said that there was no delay in the U.S. Well, even B&H is delaying the delivery. Why, because Pentax told them not to release until the instructed date, which is one month later than the original. They may be receiving some shipments by now, but that does not mean they can sell them. A lot of confusions.
