Alan,
(a) dont' know how to log on  -
(b) I seem to have two folders that are My Documents - the ones
  I created since Ive been on the machine are in one place
 but the ones I brought over from the old machine are in a sub
directory

(c) when I do a search and try to open a file I've found with
MSword
  it  tells me I don't have access to it... I have to ask the
owner.

unfortunately, when I first got the machine I appear to have
created a user
area called ann. sigh.
