What is "unusable" about the built-in flash unit? It should operate  
just as the *ist DS and other models do: full output, unmetered. You  
set the shutter speed to anything up to 1/180 sec and set the  
aperture as required by the ISO and focus distance. A Guide Number  
chart and instructions to calculate the correct aperture are provided  
on page 176 in the manual.

I've never seen reliable, credible data on the flash trigger voltage  
for any of the Pentax DSLR bodies. I've seen reports even from Pentax  
that differed by reporting anything from 12v to 400v as compatible.  
So, I look at trigger voltage and if I see anything greater than 10V  
I'd fit a Wein Safe Sync to protect the camera.
